Each city and each village in Portugal are very different, and a Golden Ring tour provides an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with a life outside the capital: in Obidos, Alcobaça, Nazare, Batalha and Fatima. On the way, we will enjoy the diversity and beauty of the unique landscapes with lush green plains and vineyards in the hills.
On one of the hills near the Atlantic coast, the village of Obidos is situated. Its flowering is directly connected with the Portuguese royal family. As early as the thirteenth century, the Portuguese king Don Dinis gave this village to his wife Dona Isabel as a wedding gift, and since then it has become a tradition the queens governed this territory. Until today this place has not lost its romantic atmosphere and attracts a large number of newlyweds thanks to the medieval atmosphere with one-store houses and blooming balconies. We will go through the walls and try the national cherry liquor, and we will learn why it is traditionally drunk from a chocolate cup.
The journey to medieval Portugal will continue in Alcobaça, where we will learn the story of the tragic love of Portuguese Romeo and Juliet, whose remains rest in the monastery of Santa Maria, located in this small town.
We will have a lunch in Nazare, where fresh seafood and fish come to your table directly from the Atlantic Ocean, and we will also learn why this fishing village attracts a large number of professional surfers.
After lunch, we will visit another majestic monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria in Batalha, where we will survive the history of Portugal under the Gothic arches of the monument that unites in harmony the traces of geniuses of architecture and art of masonry.
Next we will go to Fatima, one of the most visited places of Catholic pilgrimage in the world. It was here that a hundred years ago a miracle recognized by the Vatican took place: the Blessed Virgin Mary predicted the future events for the three shepherds. All her predictions have come true, and part of the last one is still kept in secret.
